To become a head of garment technology level, you can start as a pattern cutter, quality assistant or technical production assistant. However, the more obvious route is to work your way up the technologist career ladder.
Most people who follow this specialism have a qualification specifically within the fashion sector and ideally with a technical focus. This is often followed by work experience and on-the-job training.
There are many universities which offer great courses in fashion design and production, but the most recognised is the London College of Fashion, which focuses purely on the fashion market.
In terms of skills, you need the ability to coach, mentor and direct your team with regards to fit sessions and critical path management. At a more senior level, you must have capabilities in budget control, analysis of fit and development of manufacturing and technical processes.
Employers will generally look for an expert in a company’s product area if they specialise, but for businesses like Per Una the position requires broader product skills and experience of dealing with a global supply base.
Salaries are between £65,000 and £85,000.
