Line Balancing:
Line balancing means balancing production line or an assembly line. It is completed in order that there's a good flow of production units from one work station to subsequent . it's the allocation of stitching machine, consistent with style and style of the clothes . It depends on what sorts of garments we've to supply . it's done to increasing productivity.
Objects of Line Balancing:
To distribute the task evenly over workstations , in order that idle time of man and machines is minimized.
To minimize the entire amount of unassigned or idle times at the work station.
To eliminate bottlenecks, ensuring a smoother flow of production.
To determine the optimal number of labor stations and operations in each station.
To maintain the morale of workers since the work content of the various workers won't be of great difference.
To maximize the manpower utilization by minimizing the idle times of the operators.
To minimize intermediate stock or work-in-progress (zero inventory or just-in-time concept).
To improve the standard and productivity of the assembled products.
To reduce waste of production and delay.
Steps For Line Balancing:
Construct the precedence diagram if not given.
Determine the cycle time required.
Determine the theoretical minimum number of labor stations required. this is often done by adding up all the task times and dividing the entire by the cycle time.
Select either the Kilbridge & Wester method or the Rank Positional Weights Method to allocate task elements to every work station.
Each work station shouldn't exceed the cycle time determined earlier. Use a table, beginning the work stations from left to right.
Use the Longest Operation Time (LOT) rule; select the task with the longest operation time next. Consider adding to the station any task whose time fits within the remaining time for that station.
Ensure that the sequencing is so as , even for the task elements in each station. Precedence relationships may interfere with assigning two tasks to an equivalent workstation.
Ensure that the restrictions or constraints for the flow line are adhered to.
Analyze the balanced flow line to enhance efficiency and to scale back idle times. An efficient balance will minimize the quantity of idle time.
Calculate the idle times, and hence the balancing loss (balancing delay) or line efficiency.
Importance of Line Balancing:
Line balancing helps to understand about new machine required for brand spanking new style.
It becomes easier to distribute particular job to every operator.
It becomes possible to deliver goods at right time at the agreed quality for list cost.
Good line balancing increase the speed of production.
Line balancing helps to match the specified machinery with the prevailing one and compare balance.
It also helps within the determination of labor requirement.
Good balancing reduces production time.
Profit of a factory are often ensured by proper line balancing.
Proper line balancing ensured optimum production at the agreed quality.
It reduces faults within the finished product.
